remembering resistance:
a century  of
women's  protest in
the  north  of  england

this aspect of the Remembering  Resistance   project   brought  to  life  the last  100  years of women’s involvement in  protests  in  the  North  of  England

In 1918, after decades of protest, all men and some women got the vote. To mark the centenary of this milestone in women’s rights, this Heritage Lottery Fund supported project ran from 2017-2019, and involved cataloguing, celebrating,
and engaging the public in women's efforts to bring about political change.

HERE  ARE  SOME  OF THE  THINGS  WE  got up to

Picture

protest tales

To understand the rich history of women and protest our volunteers recorded over 100 oral histories of women activists. We compiled a database of archives with material on women's activism in the UK and launched our museum of resistance.

POP-UP  EVENTS

Throughout the project we shared what we learned with communities who live in areas with a history of protest. We organised 'pop-up' events and invited members of the community to get involved.

PROTEST MAPPING

Together with our volunteers we mapped women's protest in the North of England over the last 100 years. We created a timeline and online map of protest events that illustrate how important women have been in campaigning for change.

All  the  information  we  gathered  is  freely available  TO  THE PUBLIC,  ACADEMICS,  &  LOCAL  HISTORIANS  by  clicking  the  links  above
